Woodside Church Centre, Buttershaw

In 1965 St. Michael and All Angel’s Church in Shelf carried out a Census on approximately 500 residents of the newly built Woodside estate and it was decided to build a church hall and house for a curate. Woodside, which was previously part of the Parish of St. Mark’s Low Moor, was transferred to Shelf Parish in 1967. House meetings had been unsuccessful in terms of numbers, so it was decided to build the Woodside Church Centre on Edgebank Avenue to serve as an outreach mission, the cost of which would be met by the Diocese. The service register records that a service took place there in July 1966, but the building was only finished after some delays due to vandalism in August 1967 and opened the following January. The Bishop of Bradford dedicated Woodside Church Centre on the 6th January 1968. The building contained a large hall which was used for church services, a playgroup, Girl Guides and Brownies, Scout and Cub meetings and other events. The final church service was held there in January 1999 after which it was leased to the Buttershaw Congregational Church up to 2003 and from 2004 to the ‘Jigsaw Project’ and was later demolished.
