Shelf Township poll for Knights of the Shire 1807

The Poll for the Knights of the Shire for Yorkshire in 1807 was the first contested election since 1741. Polling took place at Castle Yard in York between the 20th May and 5th June 1807.

Candidates:
Lord Milton
William Wilberforce
Henry Lascelles

The requirement to vote at that time was that you must own freehold land worth 40 shillings or more.
The ballot was a public affair and lists like the one we have transcribed below
were later published.
A 1 in the column indicates which candidates votes were cast for. Wilberforce and Lascelles represented the Conservative party and Milton was a Whig. Wilberforce gained the majority of the votes and Milton took the second seat.
