New Works School Low Moor: Girls

This logbook covers the years 1886 to 1917 when it was a Junior Girls School. Following the Low Moor Munitions Explosion in August of 1916 the school transferred to Carr Lane School and closed in the following March, when we presume the pupils were formally transferred to Carr Lane Girls School. It is not clear from the entries if classes were ever held in the New Works premises after the explosion of August 1916. The explosion referred to in February 1917 was at Samuel Breaks Munitions Factory (Later Marks Chemicals now Nufarm UK on Wyke Lane).
The same book was previously used as New Works Mixed Infants logbook 1872 to 1885 and continued to be used from 1917 to 1928 as Carr Lane Girls School.

The original is deposited at Bradford Archives reference 19D75/8/1. There is an index to all log books here. The image shows one of the classes around 1912.

63 1886 12 18 'This School has been reopened during the past year as a Department for Day Scholars, and the Mistress, as might have been expected from previously good work at Carr Lane, has made a successful beginning. The Girls passed a creditable examination. The points that may be improved are the answering of questions bearing on the subject matter of what is read, and the style of the handwriting. The last is small cramped and careless. More practice is wanted in Oral Arithmetic, but the written work was fairly good. The recitation was nicely said. Grammar was fair. Needlework was very fair. Now that the building is used again as a School I hope the wall facing the road will no longer be used by Bill Posters'.

216 1888 11 09 'Although the staff has been deficient of late, the tone and discipline are admirable, and the girls have passed a good examination in both Elementary and Class Subjects. Reading is fluent, well articulated and intelligently modulated, but the voice is often pitched in too high a tone. The sense of the text is generally followed and the oral answering is very satisfactory. Writing is good in the first three standards but rather feeble and uneven in the fourth and fifth. Spelling is satisfactory but only one of the Composition exercises in the fifth standard showed a knowledge of the ordinary rules. The Arithmetic was accurate, intelligent and well set down, though not all that could be desired in the way of neatness and figuring. Under Article 109(f) the highest mark is well deserved in both cases. Adverbs should be more carefully taught in the Third Standard. The Garments have been exceedingly well (done) made and the note singing was very good.
217 1888 11 09 School Staff for the Year Anne Briggs First Class Certificate. Edith Maude Horsfield Third Year Teacher. Emma T. Arnold First Year Teacher. Annie Mathers First Year Teacher.

234 1889 02 08 Copy of Report for 1888.
235 1889 02 08 'The children passed on the whole a good examination and a very nice tone prevails in the school. Reading wants intelligence; the contents of the lesson should be talked over with the class in order to encourage thought. Handwriting in the paper work is not sufficiently careful in respect of the formation, spacing and joining of the letters. Spelling is good except in the fifth, sixth and seventh standards where it was weak. The written exercises in Arithmetic were generally good but practice is required in oral answering. The full grant is recommended for English but pains should be taken to make the children understand more of what they learn. Needlework was good".

Nevertheless the girls are receiving an excellent training under a devoted and experienced staff of teachers and retain their attachment to the school long after leaving. The present Geography scheme is faulty, in as much as it practically leaves out all treatment of England and Ireland and necessitates the use of books in Standard III which are too advanced for the children. The proper solution of the difficulty would be to secure suitable books for the different standards and connect the Geographical Teaching directly 'with them'.

2022 1913 02 17 Copy of Report
2023 1913 02 17 "This is a good example of a successful Girls School. The efforts of the Head Mistress and her Staff have been largely directed towards fostering a spirit of alertness and industry and much of the work, such as the Brush- Drawing in the First Class, the written Composition in Standard IV and the teaching of the three rudimentary subjects in Standard I is excellent. Needlework is made as far as possible constructive and interesting, and Arithmetic is taught in sensible lines throughout the School. The use of more practical Arithmetic books, would however, be an improvement and the subject could then be linked up with a scheme of Domestic Science. The tidiness of the girls is a most praiseworthy feature, but elaborate neatness in Writing is apt to be unduly insisted on at the expense of fluency. The possibiliy of according a broader and more effective treatment to some of the subjects e.g. Poetry in the First Class was discussed at the Inspection".
