POLLARD |
In memory of William Pollard, son of John and Mary POLLARD of Shelf, who departed this life May 22nd 1827 in the 33rd year of his age. This tomb was erected as a memorial of gratitude and respect to a dutiful son and an affectionate brother. He was a friend to the instruction of the rising generation and one of the first founders of the Sunday School in this place, in which, while health permitted, he continued to labour with unabated zeal. With patience to the last he did submit, And murmured not at what the Lord thought fit. He with a Christian courage did resign, His soul to God, at his appointed time. Kind angels watch this sleeping dust, Till Jesus come to raise the just, Then may he wake with sweet surprize, And in his Saviour's image rise. |

Also, Esther, daughter of the above who died July 21st 1844 aged 20 years. Sweet charming youth beloved by all, Who knew thy rising wealth, Thou suddenly art call'd away To meet with kindred earth, Not all thy youthful charms could stay, Deaths cruel fatal deed, Thou suddenly art torn away, From those whose hearts now bleed, Thous'd bid adieu to parents dear, Brothers and sisters too, Who long for thee will shed a tear and oft their griefs renew, Nor can thy teachers soon forget, Their lovely pupils face, And all thy school mates do regret, To see thy vacant place, Weep not for me thou seems to say, Dear parents sister friends, Rejoice rejoice I'm called away, To bliss that never ends. |
