Carr House School

Carr House School, Shelf

Carr House School was built in 1816 by public subscription “for the children of parents of all persuasions.” The school was used as a preaching station by Heywood Chapel in Northowram and preaching was held at “stated periods.” It was sometimes referred to as an 'Independent Chapel' and a Sunday school was held. The denomination was Independent which later became the Congregational Church. In the late 1860's the Congregation decided to build a chapel of their own, the Buttershaw Congregational Church. The school finally closed in 1886 when it was purchased by nearby Bethel Chapel to use as a Sunday School. The building was extended at both ends in 1904. It is now private housing.

The Pollard family reserved land at the side of the building to use as a private burial ground for members of their family.
