Carr Lane School Low Moor: Girls' School Logbook

This logbook covers the activities, events and reports of Carr Lane Girls' School Low Moor from December 1872 to November 1888 and provides a fascinating insight to later 19th century School life. The Head Mistress was Martha Barraclough until Dec 1878, then Annie Briggs until March 1884, then Laura M Linfoot. In 1889 the Carr Lane Boys' and Girls' Schools amalgamated to become a Mixed School.

The original is deposited at Bradford Archives ref 19D75/4/2 .

Miss Annie Briggs was headmistress of New Works School from 1877 to 1878, when there were 166 children there. She left for Carr Lane School in November 1878 and returned to New Works School in 1886. Miss Briggs was reputed to have been a very popular Headmistress "loved by all", and on her retirement she presented each pupil with this photograph, autographed on the back.

There is an index to all log books here.

153 1876 Jan-28 Extract ' From the Report of W. Bailey Esqr. 'The school continues chiefly of children in the two lower standards, scarcely more than one fifth of those presented being above the second standard. The reading is accurate but without expression and the spelling is of average merit. The writing is fairly done but the second standard only works on slates, next year this standard will have to be examined on paper. Arithmetic is still defective. The infants class is well taught but as the average attendance of children above seven is large it would be advisable to get a certificated teacher for the infants so that Miss Barraclough might give her undivided attention to the upper part of the school. The teachers should have all ready for the inspection by the time appointed. There were on the day of inspection a large number of absentees among the infants, which seemed to show some want of due influence over them. The average attendance during the past year required a staff equivalent to four pupil teachers throughout the year. The vacancy occurred on the 26th March through the departure of S Bower, another on the 29th July through the departure of M E Mortimer, the former works a forfeiture at the rate of ?8 (Article 32(c).1.) the latter at the rate of ?20 (Article 32(c).1.) the total deduction under this article is therefore 7 twelfths of ?8 and 3 twelfths of ?20 i.e. ?9.13.4. An assistant teacher (Article 79) should be engaged at once or two pupil teachers transferred from some other schools. The grant is further reduced by one tenth for the bad examination passed by the children in arithmetic (Article 32 (B). My Lords will expect a much larger proportion of scholars qualified by attendance to be present by examination next year, otherwise the grant may have to be reduced independently of the results actually obtained in the examination. In order to render the school efficient My Lords consider it essential that the infants should be formed into a separate department. A Wales having been returned last year as over six is disqualified by age for a further presentation under Article 19(13).1. I am to state that HM Inspector is unable to approve N Mitchell under Article 32(c)3. She will not therefore count as part of the teaching staff. S E Platts Composition, A Allison Failure

Arithmetic of the first standard is almost a complete failure, most of those present being unable to write down simple numbers. It is also bad in the second standard. Elsewhere moderate writing is fair but spelling bad everywhere. Reading is only moderate. The Discipline should be stricter. During the examination there was much talking and several attempts to copy. The Teacher should be careful to see that preparations are made for the inspection that scholars know in what standard they are to be examined and that schedules are completely filled up before the inspection, more care should be taken in transferring the number of attendances from the Registers to the Schedules. In the Infant Department the Reading is fair and the Arithmetic good, writing is bad singing fair. 255 1878 Mar-22 Extract of Her Majesty's Inspectors Report Low Moor Carr Lane School 'It is very necessary that efficient means should be at once adopted for the improvement of the state of this school. The results of the instruction are very poor. The large first Standard passed an unsatisfactory examination especially in Arithmetic and among the other classes, reading, while fairly fluent in some Standards, is deficient in intelligence. Spelling is very moderate, writing in many cases is careless and Arithmetic is in need of more attention. Nor are the infants satisfactorily instructed. The Managers have already been informed that a separate department for the Infants is considered essential. The discipline of the Infants is satisfactory but in the other room besides a wasteful want of method and order, proper attention is not paid to cleanliness of other room or children. As in previous years the arrangement had not been made in due time. Nor were the Schedules complete. No Admission Book has been kept. The Attendance Registers are very slovenly and though there appears no evidence whatever of bad faith they show somewhat frequent mistakes. Maps of Yorkshire, Europe, Asia and the World, about three or four more long desks for the older children and a proper supply of desks for the older children of a suitable size for the older infants for whom at present there are none, and materials for Form and Colour lessons are wanted. A Statement of the school staff and the correspondents signature should be appended to the Report in the Log Book. The name of A Tordoff has been struck off the Examination Schedule of the mixed school under Article 19(B) and the name of A Watson has also been struck off the Infants Examination Schedule under Article 19 (B.1). My Lords regret to find this School in so very unsatisfactory condition. General improvement will be expected next year or a heavier deduction than one tenth will be made. The Infants must be taught as a separate department under a certificated teacher in order to earn a grant under Article 19 (B) 1. I am to request your attention to Article 32 (C) The services of four pupil teachers are necessary in your school to avoid a deduction and should be at once procured. S E Platts is not qualified by this examination under Article 60 or 79. She can be qualified for Article 79 only by passing the examination specified in Article 91. 300 1879 Jan-28 Copy of report. 'The organisation of this School remains the same as last year but there is, I am glad to say, to be an immediate and thorough change. There has been some improvement during the past year. The children and the room were cleaner and the order is somewhat better. The results of the examinations are less unsatisfactory than last year in the elementary subjects, but they still leave very much to be desired. Grammar was very poor and geography almost a complete failure, very few indeed of the child's books are properly filled up according to the requirements of the circular of the 11th January 1878. An unusually large proportion of children were absent from examination. The scholar numbered 65 in the third examination schedule is disqualified (Art 19 b). In pursuance of last year's warning the grant under Article 19 (b) l (a) has been withdrawn. I am to inform you that considerable further improvement will be required next year in order to escape a heavy deduction under Article 32 (b) 1.' Copy of Report for 1883 'The girls passed a fair examination in the three elementary subjects. The results are as good as can be expected where the attendance is so irregular, about 60 children seem to be absent every day without excuse. The results cannot be good however hard the teacher works while this irregularity continues. The reading was good in the first standard, very fair in the second and third standards, fairly good in the fifth and sixth standards, it was poor in the third standard. The spelling was good in the first standard and fair in the second and fourth standards but was weak in the third standard. The composition of the fifth and sixth standards was weak. The handwriting was good in the first standard, fairly good in the second standard and very fair above. The arithmetic was good in the first standard and very fair in the second standard but it was weak in the higher standards. The mental arithmetic was weak. The singing was good and the modulator and time exercises were well done; very few girls could manage the ear tests. The order of the school was very good. Under Article 109(f) the recitation was fairly good on the whole but the scholars were not always properly prepared to answer questions on the passage learnt. The grammar was fairly good. The higher standards (fifth and sixth) should understand the voices of verbs. The needlework was good but the teaching should be corrected in certain points as suggested. The good tone of the school leads one to expect better results than fair but the third standard did badly and the irregular attendance accounts for short coming in other standards.'

Copy of Report for 1884 'The girls passed a very fair examination in the three elementary subjects. The quality of the passes is not equal to the quantity. The tone & order of the school appear to be remarkably good. The reading was fairly good in the first & second standards, the book used in the latter standard was exceedingly easy; in the third standard the style of the reading was better than the answering. The upper standards read fairly well but the power to answer questions should improve. Handwriting needs attention; it is often ill formed and the letters are badly joined; the children should be taught to hold their pens properly & the subject should be more systematically treated. Spelling was fair although rather week in the second, third & fourth standards. Composition needs attention in the fifth & sixth standards. Arithmetic was good in the first standard & excellently good in the second standard, it was fair in the higher standards; in the third standard however not one of the 57 girls worked the problem. Mental arithmetic was fair. Under Article 109 (f) the Recitation was nicely said. The knowledge of grammar was fair; in the fourth standard the papers showed many gross errors; the sixth and seventh standards did fairly well. The favourable impression left by the tone of the school might have been allowed to compensate for weakness in the elementary work had the pupil teachers been better prepared for their examination. As it is I can only recommend the fair merit grant.' Signed H L Cook Correspondent

The desks have to be arranged six deep when the room was not built for such an arrangement it interferes with the instruction. Copy of Report 'The school is in an unsatisfactory condition in respect both of moral tone and attainments. Whilst the work was being carried on in what appeared an orderly manner, there were several cases of copying and even after warning certain girls persisted in asking and giving assistance in a very deceitful manner. The first standard is badly taught in all subjects and I do not think the teacher in charge of it is capable of doing the work she undertakes. As to the rest of the work, the reading even where clear and fluent was quite unintelligent and the children could not tell what they were reading about. Handwriting is taught on no system; shape, joining, slant are all poor. Arithmetic is bad in the higher standards and oral practice has been quite neglected. Composition and spelling are both weak in the higher standards. The present mistress has not been many months in charge of the school, but she is neither working upon good methods nor inculcating a good tone.

Copy of Report - A marked improvement has taken place in the discipline of this school since the last examination and the attainments have advanced with it. The best work was in the first and second Standards which promises well for the future. In the rest of the school the mechanical part of the work is better done than that part which requires thought. Reading, for instance, is fluent and mostly clear, but the children do not gather the sense; sums, again, that need no reflection are correctly worked, but those which do are attempted with poor success. The teachers should aim at cultivating the reason as well as the memory. Spelling was very fair. Handwriting is improving. Needlework is now fairly good, and shows signs of careful teaching. Recitation was well said, but not well understood. The knowledge of grammar was only fair and should improve to earn the double grant next year. The Good Merit Grant is recommended in consequence of the highly satisfactory advance upon last year's results. A porch in which to hand cloaks and hats would do much to promote order, besides adding to the comfort of the children.

948 1888 Dec-12 Copy of Report - The girls passed a fair examination. Reading was fairly good in points of style in the first and second standards, but above them the girls understood next to nothing of what they read: The teachers do not seem to see that the object of teaching Reading is to enable the children to gather the sense of what they read, and express it in their own language.
949 1888 Dec-12 Handwriting is weak in the first class, and fair in the others. Spelling was good in the three first standards, but it fell off in the first class. Arithmetic was good (written) in the three first standards, but in the fourth, fifth and sixth standards it was very poor; it was wanting in accuracy, method, and intelligence. Oral arithmetic was also a universal failure. The Knowledge of Grammar was insuficient to earn any grant. The Needlework was not so good in the higher as in the lower standards. An earnest effort should be made to improve the work of the first class next year. The order was good. Staff for 1899. Laura Margaret Linfoot (Head Teacher) Annie Seed Assistant Mistress Annie T Green Assistant Mistress (left Jan 21st /89) Sarah Holdsworth Third Year p.t. Louisa Hodgson - Third Year p.t.
