Pepperhill Unitarian Church, Shelf
The Pepperhill Unitarian Church was built in 1861 initially as a school house. Initially Alexander Stradling of the Northgate End Unitarian congregation at Halifax began to visit Pepper Hill in 1859 and started a Mutual Improvement Society and Sunday School. The building was erected in 1861 and opened in January 1862. Services were held and eventually the classes stopped. It was extended in 1904 and extensively rebuilt in 1936 when part of the building collapsed. Pepperhill claims to be the highest Unitarian pulpit in Britain, standing at over 1,000 feet above sea level.
Note that the place Pepper Hill is two words, but the Chapel is one word.
