St Aidan's, Buttershaw
St Aidan's originated in the desire to plant a mission church in the Horton Bank Top area. Residents of Clayton Heights began to hold services in various houses and a conservative clubroom before they raised the money to build a wooden mission church called St Edward's on Highgate Road in Clayton Heights in 1921. Initially services were held by the clergy of Clayton Parish Church. It was made a 'conventional district' in 1938 but this church declined and the members met in various premises on Cooper Lane until two cottages at 488 and 490 Beacon Road were converted into the Church of St. Thomas of Canterbury which was opened in 1944. Following the construction of the Buttershaw housing estate a new Church was built at Lastingham Green in the heart of the estate and was dedicated to St Aidan and consecrated on the 26th September 1959. On the 1st April 1994 St Aidan's joined St Michael and All Angel's Shelf to become the Parish of Shelf with Buttershaw. Structural problems forced the closure of St Aidan's and the closing service was held on the 10th September 2000. A new church building was built on Ridings Way adjacent to the Healthy Living Centre and opened in August 2001.
Baptism registers start in 1939, the earlier baptisms prior to 1959 took place at St Edward's and St Thomas's. Baptism records from St Edward's between 1921 and 1939 would be in the Clayton Parish Registers. Marriage registers commence with the opening of St Aidan's in 1959. There is no burial ground at this church.
The records are held at WYAS Bradford under the reference BDP34.
